Plans, Billing & Usage Limits
Current ReturnMate plans, prices, RMA/location/staff limits, the 14-day trial, read-only mode and plan-gated analytics.
This is the single source of truth for ReturnMate plans, limits and billing behaviour. Other articles link here rather than repeating prices.
Plans and pricing
All prices are in USD and billed monthly through Shopify. The billing page notes that annual plans are available at a discount.

Both Ops and Scale include a 14-day free trial, handled by Shopify when you approve the subscription. Enterprise is arranged manually with our team (the Contact sales button emails support) and is not self-service.
How billing works
- Subscriptions are Shopify app subscriptions — charges appear on your Shopify invoice, and you approve, change or cancel the plan through Shopify.
- Open Settings → Billing in ReturnMate to view your current plan, change plans (Upgrade to Scale / Downgrade to Ops) or manage the subscription in Shopify (Manage plan in Shopify).
- After approving a charge you'll briefly see "Activating your subscription…" while ReturnMate syncs with Shopify.
Usage limits and what happens at them
Settings → Billing shows a "This month's usage" card with usage bars for RMAs, locations and staff users:
- At 80% of a limit the bar turns amber with a "Near limit" badge.
- At 100% it turns red with a "Limit reached" badge, and a banner appears: "You've reached your monthly RMA limit. Upgrade your plan to continue creating RMAs this month."
At the RMA limit, creating new RMAs is blocked (from the admin, customer portal and External API) until the calendar month resets or you upgrade. Existing RMAs can still be processed. Location and staff limits block adding new locations/users; deactivated users don't count.
RMA usage counts all RMAs created since the start of the current calendar month, whatever their source or current status.
Read-only mode
If your subscription lapses, is cancelled, or was never activated, your store enters read-only mode. A banner appears — "Your subscription is inactive" — with a Reactivate Subscription action:
- You can view existing RMAs, analytics and settings.
- You cannot create RMAs or make changes.
Reactivating through Settings → Billing restores full access immediately.
Plan-gated features
The following Analytics tabs require the Scale plan or above — on Ops they show an upgrade prompt instead of data:
- Products (including failure analysis)
- Process
- Shipping Costs
- Inventory
- Staff Performance and Staff Activity
- Inspections
Core analytics — Returns, Warehouse Mistakes, Warranty & Repairs, Stale RMAs and Product Report — are available on all plans.
Cancelling and uninstalling
- Cancelling the subscription in Shopify moves the store to read-only mode; your data is retained and you can resubscribe.
- Uninstalling the app deactivates the store, cancels the subscription, and later triggers permanent data deletion via Shopify's privacy webhooks. See Installing ReturnMate & Your Data before uninstalling.
Troubleshooting
- "Plan required" or forced to the billing page — new installs must choose a plan before setup begins.
- Paid in Shopify but still read-only — reopen ReturnMate; activation syncs when the app loads with
status=activated. If it persists, contact support@returnmate.io. - Need more than 1,000 RMAs/month — contact sales about Enterprise.
