Print Clients & Labels
Set up label printers and print clients for direct thermal printing of shipping labels and device tags.
Print Clients connect your label printers directly to ReturnMate for automatic label printing. Configure under Settings > Print Clients and Settings > Labels & Device Tags.
Print Client Setup
The ReturnMate Print Client is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that connects to your locally installed printers.
Requirements:
- Windows 10+ or macOS 11+
- On macOS, separate builds are available for Apple Silicon (M-series) and Intel Macs
- The printer must be installed in the operating system first — on Windows via the printer's Windows driver, on macOS as a CUPS printer (e.g. Zebra's CUPS driver in System Settings → Printers)
Download the App
In Settings > Print Clients, download the build for your platform: Windows, Mac (Apple Silicon) or Mac (Intel).
Generate Pairing Code
In Settings > Print Clients, click Add Print Client and enter a name (e.g. "Warehouse Bay 1"). A pairing code is generated, valid for 10 minutes.
Pair the Client
Enter the pairing code in the desktop app. The client will connect and show as Active.
Configure Printers
In the desktop app, select which connected printer handles each carrier and label type.
Transport Modes
| Mode | Description |
|---|---|
| POLL (recommended) | Checks for new print jobs every 3 seconds |
| SSE | Server-Sent Events — pushes jobs instantly, requires persistent connection |
Print Client Status
| Status | Description |
|---|---|
| Active | Connected and ready to print |
| Disconnected | Client not currently connected |
| Pending | Awaiting pairing |
| Revoked | Access has been revoked |
Label Settings
- Each print client has a Default Label Size for shipping labels — ZPL 4×6 (thermal), PDF 4×6 (thermal) or PDF A4 (office paper printer) — set when adding or editing the client in Settings > Print Clients
- The default size for device tags is configured separately under Settings > Labels & Device Tags, with sizes for Zebra and Dymo tag printers
Supported Printers
- Zebra thermal printers (GK420d, ZD420, ZD620, etc.)
- Dymo LabelWriter printers (450, 550, etc.)
- Any ZPL-compatible printer
Labels can also be downloaded as PDF or printed via the browser for non-thermal setups.
